People living in Vail and its surrounding areas, known as Eagle County, are very laid back most of the time.  They get to enjoy the fresh mountain air and all the outdoor activities one could dream of including four-wheeling, hiking, skiing and fishing.  The majority of residents who live in Eagle County feel that the quality of life is excellent.  Vail provides immense natural beauty coupled with a small town feel.  Wildlife including Elk and deer can often be seen in your own backyard and the big city of Denver is only a short 2 hour drive away.

There is a part of the population that doesn’t feel quite the same.  The younger generation consisting of people roughly under the age of 30 thinks that it is extremely hard to make a living in Vail and therefore view the quality of life as much lower.

The double edge sword of growth has brought with it a variety of shops, restaurants and services which have made life better for many residents.  It has also brought with it crowds, extremely high real estate prices both for buying properties and renting properties and something people didn’t think would exist up here, traffic.  As in the rest of the country, illegal immigration is a problem in Vail as well.  Immegrants are prevalent in Vail.  The majority of workers in Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Safeway and City Market are all foreign immigrants who will work for lower wages which then contributes to lower wages for several workers.

Long time residents or locals find it hard to believe that they are now having to talk about problems like traffic and housing.  But these are two serious issues for Vail and the rest of Eagle County.  Housing has become such a problem for workers that developers such as Vail Resorts are trying to come up with alternate solutions to accommodate these people.  As with many areas of the United States that pride themselves on the natural beauty of their land, Vail’s residents are protective of their land.  While growth is inevitable, people want planned growth.  They are looking to local governments to address the traffic, affordable housing and limiting the amount of building on their beautiful land.

But when all is said and done, the locals as they are called, love their home town of Vail Colorado and are grateful to be living in such a gorgeous place.
