Produced by Gary Lashinsky since 1970, these internationally acclaimed Lipizzaner horses and riders will perform “Airs Above the Ground,” including spectacular maneuvers once used by riders to defend themselves in battle. Horses and riders, many visiting from Europe, will conclude with a performance of the traditional and highly technical equine ballet called the Grand Quadrille.
The Grand Quadrille features exciting maneuvers through the highest level of dressage. The Lipizzans prance, march, and intricately weave their way across the floor to the music of the Masters in an unforgettable display of grace and majesty. The current tour features 12 to 14 stallions in the exciting presentation.
The Lipizzan is a rare and unique breed brought to the forefront by a Walt Disney movie, “The Miracle of the White Stallions,” depicting General George S. Patton saving them from extinction at the end of World War II.
Over 2,000 years ago, the forerunner of the Lipizzan was bred in Carthage and then bred to the Vilano, a sturdy Pyrenees horse with Arab and Barbary strains resulting in the fabled Spanish Andalusian. These incredible horses were raised on stud farms and exported to Italy and Denmark. Later the Emperor of Austria established a royal stud farm in Lipizza near Trieste. Time took a toll on these horses and it took an infusion of fresh blood to recapture the vitality of the line. In 1915, they were split up, some going to Laxenburg and others to Kladrub. When the House of Hapsburg fell in 1918, Lipizza was absorbed by Italy and the horses were divided between Italy and Austria.
The Austrian horses were bred for warfare, disciplined in classical equestrian arts that took great strength and stamina. The Airs Above the Ground features some of the maneuvers:
• Mezair: a series of successive Levades in which the horse lowers forefeet to the ground, rises on hindquarters, while moving forward.
• Courbette: jumps from balanced position on hind legs
• Levade: maintains a hunched position at a 45-degree angle
• Capriole: forelegs are draw in while leaping and hind legs suddenly kick out violently
