Even at the onset of ski season, it’s never too early to start thinking about golf. Golf digest magazine never stops thinking about golf, and it thinks pretty highly of golf in the High Country.
The magazine rated the central Rockies resort region, the area between Breckenridge and Glenwood Springs, including Vail and Aspen, as the nation’s hottest retirement destination for golfers
Golf Digest was particularly fond of Red Sky Ranch but said “It’s not the only golf development to make this area a viable retirement destination. The region is home to seven of Colorado’s top-20 courses. Golf Digest ranks Red Sky Ranch’s two courses, designed by Tom Fazio and Greg Norman, sixth and ninth respectively.
We’re thrilled and happy to be North America’s No. 1 golf experience,” said Brendan McCarthy of Vail resorts, who owns and operates Red Sky Ranch. “We’ve received many awards for Red Sky Ranch, and we’re proud of each one. It’s just another indicator that the Vail Valley is a perfect year round destination.”
Red Sky homes are priced in the millions and one acre home sites cost around $725,000. The Magazine said baby boomers are attracted by the “mild summers and by courses that are less crowded than in such areas as Palm Springs, Scottsdale, and Austin Texas.”
The short golfing season is a drawback, as is the winter traffic on interstate 70, the magazine said, but new courses make it an “attractive golf-retirement destination.”
The Longitudes Group did the rankings for the magazine. They considered the number of golf courses built since 2000 and new courses being planned or constructed. That coupled with quality-of-life statistics such as safety, weather (playable golf days), culture, health care and airport access.
