As the warm weathers begins to wave her gentle farewell, just before the ski season begins, there are still plenty of things to do in the beautiful Colorado Rocky Mountains around Vail. Here are just a few wonderful ideas:
For a taste of fresh fruit and vegetables, stroll through the Edwards Farmer’s market open Saturday’s through September 22nd. Neighbors from Singletree, Homestead, Arrowhead, and even Beaver Creek and Bachelor Gulch stroll through the market. It is a weekly gathering place. After eating some of Ruth’s homemade Toffee, head West past Eagle and Gypsum to the Glenwood Canyon Recreational Trail. The trail is an 18 mile smoothly paved path that affords the entire family a gentle ride. You will glimpse views of Whitewater rafters and kayakers navigating the Colorado river. To get there take exit 133 from Interstate 70 at Dotsero and head west on the north side of the frontage Rd until it ends at the Eastern Trailhead.
Before leaving the Vail Valley, head to Glenwood Springs for a dip in the hot springs pool, an early dinner and a stroll through the quaint village. Continue on I-70 from the trailhead to the Glenwood exit.
Fishing in the mountains of the Vail Valley is both peaceful and fun. Head down valley towards Eagle for Crooked Creek Pass. There are several man-made ponds and a clear mountain lake. Fly Fisherman will love the challenge of luring in the brook trout. Take I-70 to Eagle, follow signs for Sylvan lake and keep going on the dirt road .
Hiking and Picnicking go hand in hand. Vail, Beaver Creek, Arrowhead and Mountain Star offer some fantastic hikes of all levels of difficulty. The views are spectacular especially this time of year as the foliage dazzles us with brilliant colors. The local Vail Visitor Information Booth can provide you with maps and details of your hike.
